The taste of their dishes were not over powering unlike some who rely on MSG to make their dishes more umami. Most of the servings were good for sharing though they also have single serve meals good for office workers on the go which they have a steady clientele from nearby offices. My favorite was the conch dish because it was unusual to find. Most of them were also healthy due to the vegetable dishes.
I don't know what it is with Chinese restaurants, but the good ones seem to get away with having as little décor as possible. Most of the good Chinese joints that I know have utilitarian tables and chairs, and there is usually a Lazy Susan in the middle of the round tables to make it easier for food to be shared by your entire dinner party. As with the decor, the best food is very often dead simple, as with the case of Yue Lai's menu. I was craving a "vetsin fix" this one time I went to Yue Lai with my sister who works in one of the skyscrapers in the area. We were both very hungry and we ordered lots of veggies, clams and this mouthwatering pork dish that is made of battered pork strips tossed in a sweet-sour raspberry sauce. It was an offbeat choice that my sister suggested, and it instantaneously became one of our favorite dishes to eat together. I also hadn't had hotpot in a long time so we also ordered the spicy soup base to dunk veggies and meats in. The broth was very spicy but it was also balanced with herbs and other condiments that made it satisfyingly great. There is this cheese-stuffed fish ball that just melts in your mouth and is all kinds of fantastic. I would love to come back really soon to try it again. I kinda miss those cheese-filled bombs of flavor.
